Popi Karaolia is a senior post-doctoral researcher at the University of Cyprus and a consultant on wastewater surveillance at the United Nations Environment Programme. Her work looks at what wastewater can tell us about public health and the environment. She studies the presence and prevalence of pathogens, antibiotic resistance and pharmaceutical residues in urban wastewater, before and after wastewater treatment. Her goal is to improve methods and systems for tracking health and environmental pollution risks through wastewater, and to help build early warning systems. Her work supports better public health decisions, environmental protection, and policies to address antimicrobial resistance.
